Last week, the Maharashtra government made a big announcement that is likely to work in favor of farmers. The state Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat said the agriculture law will be amended and the revised version will be introduced on July 5.
This was done in response to the union government’s agricultural laws that caused huge protests from the farmers of Punjab and Haryana. As per the minister, the new law will address all issues of the farmers and are much better than the central government’s counterpart. He made this announcement after meeting NCP chief Sharad Pawar at his residence.
The decision was made after a meeting which was joined by Thorat, MoS Agriculture and Cooperation Vishwajeet Kadam, Agriculture Minister Dada Bhuse, and Cooperation Minister Balasaheb Patil. The affirmative minister said that the amended laws will benefit the farmers and are made to be beneficial for the cooperative sector too.
Since November 2020, thousands of farmers have been camping at the major border points of Delhi, notably Ghazipur, Singhu, and Tikri. They all are demanding the total revoke of the proposed Agricultural that does away with minimum support price with some other conditions.
Multiple rounds of discussions have happened and failed to resolve this issue. The Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has reiterated many times that government is ready for talks and for roundabout solutions, but is not willing to repeal the law altogether. This issue has remained a bone of contention between farmers and the central government for months and drawn attention from international leaders, communities, and even celebrities.
With the new law, the farmers of Maharashtra can hope for something better. It certainly gives them more hope about prices.
